Louie Fund

The Louie Fund is an initiative between the DDC, Water Corporation and the South Western Times to raise money through corporate sponsorship to provide engaging marine education for school students throughout our region. Financial support for this fund comes from local businesses and organisations as fund partners.

The aim of the Louie Fund program is simply to provide local schools with subsidised education programs where the business partner provides the majority of the financial costs associated with the excursion. Each Louie Fund Partner directly funds marine education and conservation programs to school students that may otherwise not be able to participate due to financial or logistical issues and demonstrates how a small business can make a difference within the local community.

This increased number of students recieving the program ensures a better understanding and appreciation for the local marine and coastal environments exists within the local region and that this knowledge will lead to actions that promote better choices towards a more sustainable future. This is a fine example of ‘Education in Action’, and will remain the programs catch cry for many years to come.

The name ‘Louie’ comes from the nickname of Mrs Evelyn Smith, known during the 70’s as the ‘Lady of the Dolphins’. She became internationally famous for feeding a small group of wild Koombana Bay dolphins from her private jetty which backed onto the Leschenault Inlet. Very quickly, the word spread that Bunbury had a new and very unique tourist attraction.
